2 oz Premium Bourbon
1.5 oz Heavy cream (or full-fat coconut milk for a dairy-free swap)
½ oz Dark chocolate liqueur or Creme de cacao
1 tsp Simple syrup (optional, or use maple syrup)
2 dashes Orange bitters
Garnish: Freshly grated nutmeg and a twist of orange peel
Ice: Large clear ice cube (preferred) or several large cubes
Directions
- Chill Your Glass: Place your rocks glass or coupe in the freezer for 5 minutes before starting to ensure the cream stays perfectly chilled.
- Combine Ingredients: In a cocktail shaker, combine the bourbon, heavy cream, chocolate liqueur, and orange bitters. If you prefer a sweeter finish, add the teaspoon of simple syrup now.
- The Shake: Fill the shaker 3/4 full with ice. Shake vigorously for about 15–20 seconds. This is crucial—you want to slightly aerate the cream to give the drink a silky, frothy texture.
- Strain: Place a large ice cube in your chilled glass and strain the mixture over it. Using a fine-mesh strainer alongside your shaker’s strainer will catch any small ice shards for a velvet-smooth finish.
- Express the Aromatics: Twist an orange peel over the glass to release the oils, then drop it in.
- The Final Touch: Grate a light dusting of fresh nutmeg over the top of the foam.
Notes
- The “Fat” Matters: Use heavy whipping cream rather than half-and-half. The higher fat content prevents the bourbon from “breaking” the cream and creates a much more luxurious mouthfeel.
- Fresh Nutmeg Only: Pre-ground nutmeg loses its essential oils quickly. Grating it fresh provides an aromatic bridge between the oak of the bourbon and the sweetness of the cream.
- Temperature Control: Since this drink contains dairy, ensure your bourbon is at room temperature but your cream is ice-cold before mixing to achieve the best emulsion.
