BOURBON101

What Is Bourbon?

Bourbon is a distinctly American whiskey made under strict guidelines. These rules don’t limit creativity — they protect quality and identity. To be legally called bourbon, a whiskey must:

• Be made in the United States• Contain at least 51% corn• Be aged in new, charred oak barrels• Be distilled to no more than 160 proof• Enter the barrel at no more than 125 proof• Be bottled at 80 proof or higher• Contain no added flavoring or coloring

These rules create bourbon’s signature foundation — rich, warm, and layered — but within those boundaries, flavor can vary dramatically.

Why Bourbon Tastes So Different From Bottle to Bottle

Despite strict legal standards, bourbon offers a wide range of flavors — from sweet and creamy to bold, spicy, and smoky.
That’s because flavor is shaped by:

• The grain recipe (called the mashbill)• Barrel char level• Warehouse placement and climate• Aging time• Proof and bottling style

Together, these create what we call bourbon’s core flavor families.

The Core Bourbon Flavor Families

Most bourbons express notes from several of these categories:

  • SweetVanilla, caramel, brown sugar, honey
  • Oak & WoodToasted oak, cedar, char
  • SpiceCinnamon, nutmeg, baking spice
  • FruitApple, cherry, dried fruit
  • SmokeLight char, campfire, barrel smoke
You don’t need to find everything — noticing just one or two is enough. Bourbon is about awareness, not perfection.

Bourbon Styles (By Mashbill)

This is where most people first start to understand their preferences.

  • Traditional / Balanced BourbonA classic, even profile of sweet, oak, and spice.
  • High Corn BourbonSweeter, softer, rounder mouthfeel.
  • Wheated BourbonWheat replaces rye — smooth, gentle, bready.
  • High Rye BourbonSpicier, sharper, more vibrant.
These styles describe the personality of the bourbon — not its quality.

Bottling & Release Styles (What the Label Terms Mean)

These aren’t types of bourbon — they describe how a bourbon is bottled or released.

  • Single BarrelBottled from one individual barrel. No two are exactly alike.
  • Small BatchA blend of a limited number of barrels. (There’s no legal definition — it’s mostly a stylistic choice.)
  • Cask Strength / Barrel ProofBottled straight from the barrel with no dilution. Bold, intense, powerful.
  • Bottled-in-BondAged at least 4 years, 100 proof, from one distillery, one season. A mark of tradition and transparency.

How to Taste Bourbon (The Right Way)

Bourbon isn’t meant to be rushed. It’s meant to be noticed. The Bourbon Bartender Ritual:

  • Observe – Look at the color and legs
  • Swirl – Gently coat the glass
  • Inhale – Nose slowly, mouth slightly open
  • Sip – Small sip, let it rest
  • Reflect – What stands out?
There’s no wrong answer — only what you experience.
