What Is Bourbon?
To be legally called bourbon, a whiskey must:
• Be made in the United States
• Contain at least 51% corn
• Be aged in new, charred oak barrels
• Be distilled to no more than 160 proof
• Enter the barrel at no more than 125 proof
• Be bottled at 80 proof or higher
• Contain no added flavoring or coloring
These rules create bourbon’s signature foundation — rich, warm, and layered — but within those boundaries, flavor can vary dramatically.
Why Bourbon Tastes So Different From Bottle to Bottle
Despite strict legal standards, bourbon offers a wide range of flavors — from sweet and creamy to bold, spicy, and smoky.
That’s because flavor is shaped by:
• The grain recipe (called the mashbill)
• Barrel char level
• Warehouse placement and climate
• Aging time
• Proof and bottling style
Together, these create what we call bourbon’s core flavor families.
The Core Bourbon Flavor Families
Most bourbons express notes from several of these categories:
- Sweet
Vanilla, caramel, brown sugar, honey - Oak & Wood
Toasted oak, cedar, char - Spice
Cinnamon, nutmeg, baking spice - Fruit
Apple, cherry, dried fruit - Smoke
Light char, campfire, barrel smoke
You don’t need to find everything — noticing just one or two is enough. Bourbon is about awareness, not perfection.
Bourbon Styles (By Mashbill)
This is where most people first start to understand their preferences.
- Traditional / Balanced Bourbon
A classic, even profile of sweet, oak, and spice. - High Corn Bourbon
Sweeter, softer, rounder mouthfeel. - Wheated Bourbon
Wheat replaces rye — smooth, gentle, bready. - High Rye Bourbon
Spicier, sharper, more vibrant.
These styles describe the personality of the bourbon — not its quality.
Bottling & Release Styles (What the Label Terms Mean)
These aren’t types of bourbon — they describe how a bourbon is bottled or released.
- Single Barrel
Bottled from one individual barrel. No two are exactly alike. - Small Batch
A blend of a limited number of barrels. (There’s no legal definition — it’s mostly a stylistic choice.) - Cask Strength / Barrel Proof
Bottled straight from the barrel with no dilution. Bold, intense, powerful. - Bottled-in-Bond
Aged at least 4 years, 100 proof, from one distillery, one season. A mark of tradition and transparency.
How to Taste Bourbon (The Right Way)
Bourbon isn’t meant to be rushed. It’s meant to be noticed. The Bourbon Bartender Ritual:
- Observe – Look at the color and legs
- Swirl – Gently coat the glass
- Inhale – Nose slowly, mouth slightly open
- Sip – Small sip, let it rest
- Reflect – What stands out?
